GUIDED IMAGERY WORKS WHEN WILLPOWER FAILS
Printed in "Making It At Home" - January 28, 2004
Okay, we all did it.  We made those New Year resolutions again!

We woke us with our last smoker's cough and we've eaten our last chocolate cream filled donut.  We WON'T  get stressed out about life any more, and we're removing that pile of clothes off the treadmill to start  using  it every day --- or are we?  Sure we are  --  we've got "willpower".  If Oprah can do it . . . .

But what happens when once again "will power" fails us?  Is there no hope?  Are we doomed to repeated failures?

The good news is guided imagery works when willpower fails.  Why?  Because guided imagery has nothings whatsoever to do with willpower.  Willpower resides in and is a function of your conscious mind  which is only 5% of our brain.  Guided imagery is the path into your subconscious mind  which is basically influenced by the imagination.  In any battle between imagination and willpower, imagination will win EVERY TIME. If you want to change or stop a particular habit, you need to incorporate the subconscious mind where all your habits are managed and controlled, "HABIT CONTROL" central, as it were.

If I say to you, "DO NOT think of a pink elephant", what is the first thought that comes to your mind?  See how STRONG your imagination is?  On the other hand, when you use willpower and TRY to do something, the harder you TRY, the less chance you have of doing it --  like  the insomniac who TRIES to sleep, the smoker who TRIES to stop, the person who TRIES to diet.  Think of the last time you invited guests to your home, and the response was "We'll TRY to make it".  I hope you didn't set a place at the table for them.

These problems respond to imagination power, not willpower.  And that is why WILLPOWER DOES NOT WORK.  In the book "The Wizard Within", written by Dr. A. M. Krasner, it compares the subconscious mind to the wonderful "Wizard of Oz".  You remember how everyone wanted the Wizard to grant  them  their wish?  The Scarecrow wanted a Brain, the Tin man desired a Heart, and the Lion longed for courage.

Of course, each of them had those things, they just didn't BELIEVE they possessed them.  And though the Wizard was just an ordinary man, he appeared magical because he had the ability to change their beliefs about themselves.  We house our own Wizard within us, the subconscious mind, that has this very same ability.

Through guided imagery you can change your beliefs and the "commands" you have been giving to your "Wizard" for as  Krasner  points out, guided imagery is your very own "Yellow Brick Road".

It's up to you NOW to take the first step on your "Yellow Brick Road" through guided imagery, to attain a healthier and happier lifestyle.  Only YOU can do this for yourself.  And YOU HAVE THIS POWER.  Go for it!  Call your local Hypnotherapist  today and start your journey back home to yourself. You deserve it!
